"By depicting these queens in his iconic pop art style, Warhol elevates their status as global icons of power and glamour..."

Released in 1985, Andy Warhol's "Reigning Queens" portfolio presents a collection of sixteen prints, each featuring one of four distinguished queens: Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, and Queen Ntombi Twala of Swaziland. Each monarch is represented in four distinct prints, reflecting the aesthetic of postage stamps. To heighten their luxury and allure, the "Royal Edition" includes diamond dust, giving the prints a glittering, opulent finish.

One of these screenprints portrays Queen Ntombi of Swaziland, who served as Queen Regent at the time Warhol created this piece. In transforming her into a pop art icon, Warhol places her alongside his previous muses, such as Marilyn Monroe and Jackie Kennedy. His earlier depictions of male leaders, like Richard Nixon and Chairman Mao, in similarly bold colours, suggest that Warhol saw these female leaders as equal to their male counterparts on the world stage. Queen Ntombi's portrait is striking, with Warhol using clashing colours to emphasize her presence, with purple-hued face is set against a brilliant red background, lined with hand drawn dashes of green, blue and white. Unlike the soft pastels in some of his previous works, Warhol opted for a bold and brilliant colour scheme for Queen Ntombi, mirroring her own striking presence. His innovative screen-printing technique allowed for the repetition of images, reminiscent of coins or stamps.

Given Warhol's notorious fascination with the glamour and adoration of celebrities, his portrayal of monarchy and royalty in the "Reigning Queens" portfolio seems a natural fit. By depicting these queens in his iconic pop art style, Warhol elevates their status as global icons of power and glamour.
