Andy Warhol Reigning Queens (Queen Margrethe II of Denmark) (F & S II.342 - 345)
Meaning & HistoryReigning Queens is a series of portraits of world Queens executed by the artist in 1985. This suite of four fantastically coloured screenprints of the Danish Monarch, Queen Margrethe II, shows Warhol’s fluency with the screenprinting process to transform Official Imagery in paying tribute to Royalty.
Of all the Reigning Queens series, Queen Margrethe is the only Queen to appear in profile for her portrait. In visual harmony with her elegant stance, Warhol’s suite is kept in mostly pastel tones of pink and lilac, an aspect of the artist’s screenprinting process that creates the illusion of rather theatrical make-up. The artist’s trademark large collage-like shapes are reduced to demure squares, embellishing her neckline almost as a second necklace. Famed for his portraits of celebrity icons, in this exceptional series Warhol considers world monarchs as not just real Queens, but as beauty Queens on the same level of his other muses such as Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Grace Kelly.
