    Meaning & History

"The mother's square, chiselled jawline is defined by what looks to be a white necklace and earring, and white highlights the topmost layer of her clothing. Layers of finely woven and fringed materials are defined by black shading. It gives amazing depth that is occasionally lacking in Warhol's other portraits."

This piece depicts a native American mother carrying her child on her back, who is innocently sleeping on her, leaning into her neck. Their skin stands out against the plain white background and their clothing's materials also make a statement while adhering to an earthy, realistic aesthetic. Warhol uses yellow outline sketches and blue patches to highlight semi-precious turquoise and cherry red fabrics. The family's jet-black hair is likewise given a reflecting highlight by the red and blue, but this highlight is created by an absent light source. The mother's square, chiselled jawline is defined by what looks to be a white necklace and earring, and white highlights the topmost layer of her clothing. Layers of finely woven and fringed materials are defined by black shading. It gives amazing depth that is occasionally lacking in Warhol's other portraits. The pixelated appearance of the picture raises the possibility of a connection being made between the native family and the media's distorted portrayal of them.  Mother and Child 383 is intentionally ambiguous. Mother and Child 383 notes a partial abstraction of their history by contemporary mass media and pop culture in the absence of a historical foundation. Other pieces in the series, such as General Custer 379 and Teddy Roosevelt 386, embody this romanticised nationalist influence and Western bias that frequently filled this void. They have a reputation as Old West heroes despite having experienced animosity against Native Americans. Warhol makes more observations on an inconsistent perspective of America's past with his brief yet tender portrayal of an Indigenous mother and child.

Growing up in the 1930s and 1940s, Warhol was surrounded by Western stars like Hopalong Cassidy, Roy Rogers, John Wayne, and the Lone Ranger. He was always drawn to the romanticised portrayal of the West in films as a child and as an adult, and Western aesthetics had a big impact on his artwork. In addition to the Cowboys and Indians portfolio, Warhol's Myths series, paintings of Elvis Presley, and appearances in films such as Horse (1965) and Lonesome Cowboys (1968) all served to highlight his ongoing fascination with Americana themes. Mother and Child is a standout piece in this portfolio, due to its intimate and tender portrayal of a moment between a mother and her child.
