  • Saint Apollonia (F & S. II 333)

    Saint Apollonia is one of four screenprints created by Andy Warhol in 1984, depicting the Virgin Martyr Apollonia. Warhol's screenprint draws from an image of the Catholic saint, originally found in Piero della Francesca’s mosaic altarpiece. Positioned against a bright yellow background, like a Pop Art equivalent of gold leaf, Warhol replicated the cracks from the original icon, reimagining a modern Pop Art piece as an appropriated cultural artefact. The story of Saint Apollonia serves as an allegory of struggle and sacrifice, as she was tortured via teeth pulling during an uprising against Christianity. In Warhol’s portrayal, she holds a tooth with pliers, symbolising both her suffering and her role as the patron saint of dentistry. 

    This series shines a light onto a hidden religious side of Warhol. Warhol had a complicated relationship with the Catholic church, as he was raised in a highly religious household, yet was open about his homosexuality in adulthood. John Richardson describes the biographical impact this series has, saying ‘knowledge of this secret piety inevitably changes our perception of an artist who fooled the world into believing that his only obsessions were money, fame, glamour’.
