Andy Warhol Truck Portfolio (F & S II.367-370)
Meaning & History"Warhol’s Truck can be seen as a Modern image of the everyday, with its subject being an integral part to both German and American industry."
Truck is a portfolio of four screenprints created in 1985. Striking in its use of complimentary colour, the series was commissioned by the German Federal Road Haulage Association (BDF) and depicts a German vehicle. Though Warhol’s patronage in this case was European, Warhol’s Truck can be seen as a Modern image of the everyday, with its subject being an integral part to both German and American industry.
The vehicle is placed at the very centre of the image, and the screenprint is divided into three planes of colour: the background, road, and foreground. Ever the skilled colourist, Warhol has combined colour and geometry to create an image that is visually arresting. 370 appears the most industrial with black and grey colouring, whilst the playful colours 367 and 368 make the truck appear like a children’s toy.
In the context of Warhol’s artistic output in the eighties, this work can be viewed as a part of a number of works he produced concerning European landmarks and places such as Mount Vesuvius, Cologne Cathedral and Neuschwanstein. Warhol’s ability to channel and reduce the essence of logos and symbols saw the artist revolutionise what was considered art. Whilst rarely choosing to use automobiles or cars, Warhol would use the logo of the Mobi gas company in his seminal Ads series. Explore Andy Warhol prints for sale.
