     Banksy Flags (Silver & Gold)

Banksy’s Flags series reimagines one of the most iconic images of twentieth-century warfare through the lens of contemporary urban culture. The composition depicts a group of children and teenagers standing atop a burnt-out car while raising the American flag, transforming a moment associated with military victory into a scene of social unrest and disenfranchisement. Produced in silver and gold editions on reflective Chromolux paper, the works possess a cinematic, almost surreal quality. By combining imagery of youth, nationalism, and destruction, Banksy examines themes of identity, rebellion, and conflict, continuing his broader critique of war, power, and contemporary society through visual satire and symbolism.

  • About Banksy Flags

In Flags (Silver and Gold), Banksy references the celebrated photograph Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima by Joe Rosenthal, which captured American soldiers raising the United States flag during the Second World War. Rather than depicting military heroes, however, Banksy replaces the soldiers with hooded youths standing atop a burnt-out car in what appears to be an urban wasteland. The figures seem marginalised and neglected, yet the act of raising the flag suggests defiance, solidarity, and reclaiming ownership over their environment. The destroyed vehicle introduces ambiguity, evoking either civil unrest or a dystopian future shaped by violence and inequality. Printed on reflective silver and gold Chromolux paper, the works possess a filmic, almost theatrical atmosphere that heightens their emotional impact. Through the juxtaposition of children and militaristic symbolism, Banksy critiques nationalism, social exclusion, and the continuing normalisation of conflict within contemporary culture and media imagery.
