Einstein was named the greatest physicist of all time in a 1999 survey of 130 eminent scientists globally conducted by the British publication Physics World.

Albert Einstein is a screenprint created by Andy Warhol as part of his 1980 Ten Portraits of Jews of the 20th Century portfolio. The series has been coined ‘Jewish Geniuses’ by Warhol himself, as each figure depicted has contributed a significant social or cultural impact on the 20th century. Each person is joined together through their Jewish heritage, and more morbidly, by the fact none of them are still alive. Therefore, the series is infused with a sense of mortality. Through this, although the figures depicted are not celebrities in the way of his other portfolios, such as Marilyn Monroe or Mick Jagger, Warhol is not only emphasising the fleeting nature of what it means to be famous, but instead highlighting the long-lasting version of fame – a legacy.

This particular print depicts perhaps one of the most recognisable faces of all time – Albert Einstein. Best known for his theory of relativity and work on quantum mechanics, Albert Einstein was a German-born theoretical physicist who is widely held to be one of the greatest and most influential scientists of all time. Einstein was named the best physicist of all time in a 1999 survey of 130 eminent scientists globally conducted by the British publication Physics World. His intellectual accomplishments and inventiveness have made the term Einstein synonymous with genius. This print stands out from the rest of the series, has Warhol has chosen to render Einstein in exclusively grayscale shades. Warhol has layered blocks of various shades of greys atop each other, with the darkest shade highlighting the clearest and most detailed section of his face. The right hand side of his profile has been only drawn out in a simple pencil sketch on a white background, contrasting with the more photographic elements of the rest of the image.

The prints of reminiscent of Warhol’s previous portfolios. However, the themes of these prints go beyond surface-level celebrity and splendour. Warhol's portrayal of Einstein in his own Pop Art style turns the respectable physicist into a 1980s Pop Art star.
