David Hockney The Start of the Spending Spree and The Door opening for the Blonde (M.C.A.T 16) For Sale

The Start of a Spending Spree and the Door Opening for the Blonde (1961) is the third plate from A Rake’s Progress, a celebrated series of sixteen etchings by David Hockney. Inspired by the narrative cycle A Rake’s Progress by William Hogarth, Hockney reimagines the eighteenth-century moral story through a modern lens. In his interpretation, the ‘Rake’ becomes a young artist navigating life in New York City during the early 1960s. Blending autobiography, satire, and symbolism, the series reflects Hockney’s own experiences travelling to America while studying at the Royal College of Art.

  • About The Start of the Spending Spree and the Door opening for the Blonde

In this intricate etching, Hockney continues the narrative of the young ‘Rake’, identifiable by his glasses and distinctive hairstyle, as he confronts temptation and uncertainty in a new environment. Suspended above him is a large bottle labelled “Lady Clairol,” referencing the hair-bleaching product the artist famously used, a playful yet symbolic nod to personal rebellion and identity. The figure gazes toward an open doorway leading to the sea, suggesting both escape and possibility. A vivid red sun, reminiscent of Japanese iconography, rises above the horizon, hinting at hope and future transformation. Through these layered visual metaphors, David Hockney explores themes of self-discovery, isolation, and aspiration. The scene reflects the emotional complexity of a young outsider seeking freedom and belonging within the cultural energy of 1960s America.
