About David Hockney Rue de Seine
At the centre of the composition, tall balcony doors framed by heavy curtains open onto wrought-iron railings and distant Haussmann architecture. Hockney carefully reduces architectural detail in the background to enhance perspective, while a vase of tulips in the foreground teeters gently forward, anchoring the scene. The goldfish motif on the vase recalls interiors by Henri Matisse, particularly Interior with a Goldfish Bowl (1914), revealing Hockney’s continued engagement with modernist predecessors. Despite the absence of colour, subtle tonal variation evokes imagined hues and natural light. Produced shortly after the end of his relationship with Peter Schlesinger, the empty interior carries a quiet sense of isolation. Created the same year as Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures), this contemplative etching marks a striking contrast within Hockney’s 1970s oeuvre.
