Keith Haring Statue of Liberty (Littman p.63)
Meaning & History"Haring undoubtedly believed that America still had strides to go in attaining true freedom for all."
Statue of Liberty is a silkscreen print created by the artist in 1986. An important American historical and cultural landmark, Haring’s depiction of the Statue of Liberty in his inimitable visual style is iconic.
Haring depicts the bust of the Statue of Liberty close-up, with his signature yellow matchstick men waving up at the sculpture. As the statue is a patriotic symbol of freedom and independence, the ecstatic people can be seen to be revelling in celebration. Knowing Haring’s devotion to social and political activism, though, the artist’s seemingly naïve scene should not be read on surface level. Haring’s work famously juxtaposes Pop style and a vivid palette against the weightier themes of oppression, inequality and disease – renowned examples include Safe Sex (1988) and Crack is Whack (1986). Bearing this in mind, Haring undoubtedly believed that America still had strides to go in attaining true freedom for all.
