Keith Haring Untitled (Medusa Head) (Littman p.55)
Meaning & History"Haring often resorted to otherworldly imagery – spaceships, monsters and dog-people populate his oeuvre –and in this print it takes centre stage."
Untitled is a monochrome etching created by the artist in 1986. A very large-scale work from a small edition of 24, the print is exceptional in capturing the dynamic essence of Haring’s work.
Using only bold, strong lines, the artist portrays a headless bust from which people offshoot from looping tentacles. The tentacles recall Medusa’s snake-laden hair from Greek mythology. Haring often resorted to otherworldly imagery – spaceships, monsters and dog-people populate his oeuvre –and in this print it takes centre stage. In a way dispelling the repertoire of modern art canon which Haring became a part, Haring makes the mythic contemporary.
