Keith Haring Untitled (Littman p.153)
Meaning & History"Universally understandable and yet indiosyncratic, Haring’s imagery conveys a playful and touching story of unity and humanity."
Untitled (Heart) is a silkscreen print created by the artist in 1989, building upon a reoccurring Haring motif: the red heart. In the buzzing and bold scene, two headless figures form a whole, a heart shape centring them. Universally understandable and yet indiosyncratic, Haring’s imagery conveys a playful and touching story of unity and humanity.
In the present work, and in Haring’s corpus, movement expressed in line is often just as important as figuration. Squiggles all around the heart connote its palpable sense of energy and joy, whilst the bracketed lines surrounding the red people similarly suggest gesture.
