Keith Haring Untitled (Dog on Podium)
Meaning & History"In this playful and witty subversion, humans are subjects of animals, rather than animals being led by humans: an allegory of power and subjugation. "
Untitled is a silkscreen print created by the artist in 1989. It comes from a small edition of 7 in which the dimensions are unique. The print is important for its rarity and late place in the artist’s career, as it was produced one year before his death. Along with two other plates as part of a series, the imagery appears in Haring's famous The Blueprint Draiwngs.
The plate makes use of one of Haring’s best-known motifs: the dog. At once a symbol of oppression and violence, or companionship, depending on its context, in this scene, a dog is worshipped on a stage. In this playful and witty subversion, humans are subjects of animals, rather than animals being led by humans: an allegory of power and subjugation.
