    Roy Lichtenstein’s Before the Mirror, 1971 is a sophisticated artwork that draws on many of his earlier prints and series in its style and composition. Across Lichtenstein’s whole oeuvre are references to light, reflection and perception; he often used the mirror -  literally and figuratively - to explore notions of artistic representation. 
    In Before The Mirror, the artist takes as a starting point the object painting: yet he immediately sabotages the frontal view of the mirror object by slashing it with parallel lines and diagonal streaks to create contrastive visuals, later explored throughout the artist’s Reflection series. 
    Lichtenstein purposely places familiar still life objects, a glass and lemon, in front of the abstracted mirror, through which we can see the reflections of his colourful stripes and patterns. The precise composition and geometric shapes are in sharp juxtaposition to the abstracted image as if to misrepresent the artwork to the viewer. 
    Beyond the Mirror is a signed lithograph and screenprint with embossing on BFK rives roll paper, one of an edition of 100, and is an artwork that evolves Lichtenstein’s visual language for later series’.
