Roy Lichtenstein Cathedral #4 (Corlett 78)
"Lichtenstein created a series of artworks featuring his signature Benday dots - familiar in halftone dots in magazines - that evoked a manufacturing of Monet's artworks"
Roy Lichtenstein’s print Cathedral #4 is from an edition of 75 in his Cathedral series which was modelled on Claude Monet’s Rouen Cathedral series.
A lithograph on Special Arjomari paper, Cathedral #4 comprises two colours – red and blue – applied through an aluminium plate. Monet sought to convey the contrasting quality of colour depicted at different times of day, in diverse seasons and weather conditions. Lichtenstein responded by creating a series of artworks featuring his signature Benday dots – familiar in half tone dots in magazines – that evoked a manufacturing of Monet’s artworks.
The merging of the Benday dots in two hues gives the background a pale-blue quality, with the subject of the painting only becoming clear from a distance, forming a merging of colliding shapes up close.
