Roy Lichtenstein Cathedral #5 (Corlett 79)
"Monet’s cathedrals are rendered in oil paint which gives as intricate and layered painterly effect, whilst Lichtenstein employed a screenprint technique that evokes a more commercial impression"
Lichtenstein created his Cathedral series in 1969 inspired by Claude Monet’s Rouen Cathedral series created in 1892-1893. Whilst the subject of the cathedral remained the same in both bodies of work as a recurring motif, the painting method differs significantly: Monet’s cathedrals are rendered in oil paint which gives as intricate and layered painterly effect, whilst Lichtenstein employed a screenprint technique that evokes a more commercial impression.
Cathedral #5, from an edition of 75, encompasses two colours – yellow and black – from two aluminium plates to create a lithograph on Special Arjomari paper. The presence of the luminous yellow gives the impression that the cathedral has been lit up by lanterns or lights, or perhaps evokes the candlelight that would be seen inside. The black background contrasts starkly to the yellow and white combination seen in Cathedral 1, which renders the outline, shape and contours of the cathedral more clearly.
