"Based on Monet’s Rouen Cathedral series painted in the 1890s, Lichtenstein replaced the brush with Benday dots”

Roy Lichtenstein’s Cathedral series - consisting of eight prints including two state editions - was compiled in 1968, the same year as his Haystack series. Both bodies of work were his first collaboration with Gemini G.E.L. in Los Angeles. He worked on Haystacks from January-July 1969 and until August for the Cathedrals.

Based on Monet’s Rouen Cathedral series painted in the 1890s, Lichtenstein replaced the brush with Benday dots. Whilst Monet painted at the site of the cathedral in Normandy in France over the course of two years, carefully and sensitively capturing the variations of light – from morning light to grey weather, a dull day to the setting sun – Lichtenstein worked from photographs of Monet’s oil paintings of the cathedral to create his correlating sequence of artworks.

Employing the commercial printing technique, Lichtenstein explored variations of light and colour through his signature Benday dots. Whilst Monet sought to capture the shifting state of light on the historic building, painstakingly charting the evolution in colour, Lichtenstein’s series of the same cathedral in bold, block colours, explored mass media and reproduction techniques.

Asked by novelist Frederic Tuten if he considered the Cathedral prints any differently from the paintings, Lichtenstein replied: “Yes, I do see them differently; I don’t quite know how. Maybe it’s because here they are cathedrals in the style of cheap printings brought back again to printings—elegant printings. Also there is the relating of Monet’s different daylight effects to the expediency of printing the same image in different colours. My Cathedral paintings use different views of the cathedral as well as different colours; and they are paintings about printing, not printing about printing.”

Like his Haystack series, for both bodies of work, Lichtenstein created a full-scale black-ink drawing, which was used to create the image on the plates. The Prints of Roy Lichtenstein catalogue raisonné (1949-1997) states: “A negative of the drawing was laid over Lichtenstein’s Benday dot stencil on the sensitised plates, recreating the pattern in the positive plate when it was exposed to light”.
