Roy Lichtenstein Figures with Rope (C.152) 1978 For Sale

The fifth print in Roy Lichtenstein’s Surrealist series, Figures with Rope captures Lichtenstein’s signature Pop art style that includes primary colours and strong outlines to depict a surreal dreamscape of disparate, disjointed elements, which culminate to create an illusory, dreamy artwork.

A series of ‘figures’ or elements stand parallel above a rope. On the left, a stack of abstract shapes climb up the frame, whilst in the centre an ear-shaped figure features a lashed eye that gazes into a freestanding mirror at the right of the frame, referencing Lichtenstein’s treatment of mirrors and reflections in the early 1970s. The presence of red stripes behind the gazing eye in the abstract body of the central shape, perhaps signifies their brain tissue or heart. The jagged edges of the mirror reveal its broken, shattered form, whilst a severed hand at the bottom of the frame adds to the fragmented nature of ruptured elements. 

A vast portion of the image is cast in diagonal monochrome stripes. Whilst the Surrealist series is devoid of Lichtenstein’s signature Benday dots, he instead uses stripes here to create texture, shading and depth.
