Roy Lichtenstein’s print Haystack #1 is a lithograph and screenprint that was produced on Rives BFK paper in 1969. Part of his Haystack series, each print is inscribed ‘R Lichtenstein 69’.
Nestled in a white screen-printed border, the lemony-yellow image captures two haystacks illuminated in the bright glow of morning sunshine. Based on Claude Monet’s series of the same name painted in 1891, Lichtenstein’s prints track the journey of the day’s light - from morning, rendered yellow in Haystack #1, to midnight, which is depicted in black in Haystack #7. Monet’s works feature a single or pair of haystacks painted at different times of the day, during different seasons in order to capture the shifting, evolving quality of light. -
