Roy Lichtenstein Haystack #5 (Corlett 69)
"Monet’s tender brushstrokes are replaced with the mechanical method of Lichtenstein’s strategic and signature Benday dots".
Part of Roy Lichtenstein’s Haystack series that reappropriated Monet’s seminal Impressionist series of barley bundles produced in 1890-1, Haystack #5 is a signed lithograph and screenprint on BFK Rives paper from an edition of 100.
The red and blue lithograph depicts two haystacks side by side, the blue colourway accentuating their curved forms. The series of ten haystacks run from morning (illuminated in yellow in Haystack #1) to midnight (rendered black in Haystack #7). This tracking and treatment of colour borrows from Monet’s evocation of light in his series that used the recurring subject of a haystack to demonstrate the dynamic interplay between light and colour with shifts of natural light on different days, seasons and times of year.
Haystack #5 is primarily rendered in a rich red, perhaps suggestive of dusk or the last moments of a scorching sunset on a summer’s day. Here, Monet’s tender brushstrokes are replaced with the mechanical method of Lichtenstein’s strategic and signature Benday dots.
