Roy Lichtenstein Haystack #7 (C.74) 1969 For Sale

Roy Lichtenstein’s monochrome Haystack #7 is the last artwork of his series that was based on Monet’s Haystack series made in 1890-91. This relief print, with one black colour run on Special Arjomari paper, is from an edition of 100. 

Monet’s series captured the changing qualities of light on a single recurring haystack subject. The differing hues of colour illustrated the shifting states of season, time of day and weather conditions through a soft, gentle palette of colours painted in oil on canvas. In contrast, but drawing from the same theme, Lichtenstein’s series of the same name combined a maximum of two colours on each print that combined bold blocks of colour to capture contrasting times of day: morning in yellow (Haystack #1) to evening (Haystack #6) and midnight (Haystack #7).

In an interview with artist and curator John Coplans, Lichtenstein discussed Monet’s Haystack paintings in relation to his prints: “The prints are a little smaller, but that’s not significant. The paintings are all different images. In terms of exactness of placement and register, the prints are better, because they can be better controlled in this medium. Working on canvas isn’t controllable in the same way. The paintings bear the tracks of corrections of various things. The prints are all worked out beforehand and appear purer.”  

This last print in the series, signed and dated in the lower right, features black Benday dots which were embossed during print and present a mechanical version of Monet’s painted changing light impressions. The stark black dots are intended to capture a nighttime scene, yet the merging of black and white in this final piece also gives the impression of a grey tone.
