    Also known as Yellow Haystack, Roy Lichtenstein’s Haystack is a screenprint on C.M. Fabriano – 100/100 Cotone paper. Signed and dated in pencil, it is from an edition of 250.

    Based on Monet’s series of Haystacks produced in 1890-91, Lichtenstein created a series with the same recurring motif of the haystack. Instead of oil painting, his works were screenprints intended to add a mechanical impression to the process. Monet’s series of Haystacks was primarily focused on the effect that light has on colour, using a palette of soft, subtle hues to depict the shifting seasons, weather conditions and times of day. In contrast, Lichtenstein’s treatment of colour is bold and stark.  

    In Haystack, the vibrant block yellow of the haystack and thick black outline anchors the subject centrally in the middle, and presents a sharp contrast to the softer impression of the Benday dots that form the surrounding land and sky. The black and white palette of the sky, with the symmetrical Benday dots running repetitively across the top third of the print, creates a grey impression, suggesting an overcast day. Meanwhile, the rigidity of the black-blocked shadow beside the haystack could indicate the setting sun. The blocks of black shapes in the background are likely to be trees, and give a more sinister, haunting effect as they overlook the fields, in contrast to the sunny disposition of the haystack.
