    Roy Lichtenstein’s Ten Landscapes series played with the traditional concept of landscape painting. Challenging customary art standards, the series depicted a variety of landscape settings comprised through commercial printing techniques, as well as applying collages of materials – including Mylar, photography, and Rowlux – to his screenprints. From an edition of 100, Landscape 9 is signed, dated and numbered in pencil. 

    The main portion of Landscape 9 features a black screenprint of swirling shapes evoking the oily surface of rippled water. Behind, a chromogenic photographic print collage of a cloudy sky with its soft-blue and hazy tone, creates a delicate and dreamy impression. In contrast, the starkness of the stencilled monochrome streaks injects a dense graphic hardness to the mood of the image, resulting from an interesting medley of materials. The curled strokes, derived from the hand-stencilled waves, have an almost painterly quality. Here, Lichtenstein’s blending of hand-made and machine-made elements creates a harmonising of mixed media.
