"In Moonscape, a sense of movement is created through the blue Rowlux material which reflects light, creating spiralling swirls in the sky".

Roy Lichtenstein’s screenprint Moonscape was originally printed in an edition of 200 and featured in the 11 Pop Artists portfolio, volume 1 commissioned by Philip Morris in Pop and Op, an exhibition of 65 graphic works. Contributing artists included Allan D'Arcangelo, Andy Warhol and Allen Jones, with each artist creating three prints, one for each volume in the series.

In the mid 1960s, Lichtenstein moved away from his comic-book motifs to explore alternative visual vocabularies. He frequently incorporated Rowlux (a thick, textured plastic) as a synthetic material to provide a contemporary, manufactured element and create new optical and colour effects. In Moonscape, a sense of movement is created through the blue Rowlux material which reflects light, creating spiralling swirls in the sky. The ripples of the Rowlux also give an illusory, dreamy quality to the sky through the twisting, spiralling, whirling of waves, offering a slightly distorted perspective through its bends and ripples.

The juxtaposition of Lichtenstein’s Benday dots are seen in the cloud shape that perhaps ominously hints at disease or pollution with the spread of speckled red dots, as it slices through the moon and spreads through the sky. The merging of the blue Rowlux with the forking black shape at the bottom of the image perhaps depicts the reflection of the sky on the sea; the two areas amalgamating as one entity.
