Roy Lichtenstein Real Estate (C.37) 1970 For Sale

For a while, Roy Lichtenstein used an image of his architectural line drawing Real Estate on his own letterhead, "because if you write to enamel companies (with that on your letterhead) they will take you seriously" (he said to Fine on August 11, 1993). 

Numbered, signed and dated in pencil on the lower right, the lithographric print Real Estate in blue ink on Arches paper features a long, horizontal composition of an industrial building. The architectural artwork was a tribute to the Pop artist’s late father who was a real estate broker. 

A seemingly simple design, the print is actually incredibly intricate with dozens of tiny, meticulously detailed window panes, which contrast against the dense block of white cloud surrounded by his signature Benday dots. There is a precision to the detailing of the micro windows which appear to be clad in bars, suggesting a prison or institution. Alternatively, the large entry-way of double doors on the bottom left could suggest a repair shop. The simple colour palette of blue and white highlights his use of line and shading achieved through the Benday dots, which are also employed to evoke shadow, the sky and ground.
