"However, in Reflections on Girl satires his own pop art signatures: the stylised girl and the viewer’s perception of her is slashed through by reflective streaks."

Reflections on Girl, 1990, by Roy Lichtenstein takes its starting point from an image in a 60’s comic book edition called, ‘Falling in Love.’ Similar to the prints in the Reflection series of which this is a part, Reflections on Girl features all Lichtenstein’s pop art signatures: an intentionally stylized and stereotypical image of a comic book blonde female beauty, bright pop colours, and his signature ben day dot technique. In the original cartoon, the text above the image read, ‘Fire seethed through my body…fanning….spreading,’ whilst here the girl’s thought bubble reads, ‘H-he couldn’t kiss me that way and love someone else! ’

However, in Reflections on Girl satires his own pop art signatures: the stylised girl and the viewer’s perception of her is slashed through by reflective streaks. The distressed, dejected expression of the girl is cut through by diagonal stripes and contrastive visuals obscuring the female face and back of her head and even slashing the thought bubble text.  Ironically the only words the viewer can decipher are ‘Kiss’ and ‘love’ – is romance the source of her troubles? We are left to create our own narrative around this dejected, comic book female figure.

Through his diagonal stripes of reflective material, Lichtenstein plays with the viewers perception. We are left to consider the relationship of art, artist and viewer: how easily our vision can be skewered to form alternative narratives – is identity just merely an optical illusion?
