Roy Lichtenstein Reflections Series
"Whilst Lichtenstein at the time was using his Reflections series to satire representation and the reproduction of image on which the pop art genre rested, ironically his themes again are relevant in a time of social media and digitalised image."
Roy Lichtenstein’s Reflection series was one of his later series of artworks consisting of seven prints (Reflections on Crash, Reflections on Conversation, Reflections on Hair, Reflections on Brushstrokes, Reflections on the Scream, Reflections on Minerva, Reflections on Girl) created in the early 1990’s. Taking his famed devotion to the stylised language of advertising and the intricacies of printmaking, Lichtenstein elevates his pop art form with a new pictorial language based on refractions and contrastive visuals.
In keeping with his early pop practice, Reflections combine traditional painterly features with the detached manner of commercial imagery, but here he sabotages his own signature pop art girls and comic storytelling through a refracted glass lens. With his characteristic use of humour, Lichtenstein also self-references his own emblematic motifs from earlier works.
We don’t need to know the identity of these figures, Reflection often just presents the viewer with details from which we can draw our own narrative: a hint of blonde locks, a curvilinear shape, an interior scene all pushed to the point of abstraction through harsh lines, sharp mirrored shapes and refracted patterns.
Lichtenstein recalled, ‘It started when I tried to photograph a print by Robert Rauschenberg. But the light from a window reflected on the surface of the glass and prevented me from taking a good picture.’
Arguably his most advanced series in technique, the prints in Reflection are produced using a combination of lithography, screenprint and relief with collage and embossing.
Challenging traditional notions of creating and seeing, Reflections are like pictures within pictures, that continue to encourage a viewer to question ideas of perception and reality.
Whilst Lichtenstein at the time was using his Reflections series to satire representation and the reproduction of image on which the pop art genre rested, ironically his themes again are relevant in a time of social media and digitalised image.
