    In 1969, Roy Lichtenstein created a series titled Haystack that comprised ten works in contrasting colours. From an edition of 100, each is signed.

    Lichtenstein re-created and modernised Monet’s series of hay bundles that the Impressionist artist produced in 1891. Monet’s series captured the ever-evolving and shifting state of natural light through the seasons, at different times of day, in contrasting weather conditions using one recurring motif – the haystack – to convey the contrasting colours that the light creates, achieved through a soft, pale palette and evocative brushstrokes.

    Using the same theme, Lichtenstein recreates the shifting state of light through bold and brilliant colour combinations using lithograph and screenprint. Through his signature Benday dots, he applied precision to his prints through the strategic and systematic placing of the dots so that each component was carefully considered. In Haystack #6, two colours – red and black – have been applied from two different plates, evoking a moody, sultry colourscape, perhaps indicative of dusk.
