Roy Lichtenstein Salute to Aviation (C.63) 1968 For Sale

Roy Lichtenstein’s screenprint Salute to Aviation was created in 1968 from an edition of 135. Signed and dated in pencil in the lower right, the print was awarded a purchase award in the Seventeenth National Print Exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum in 1970. 

The print serves as an ode, or love letter, to the elements of aviation engineering. Lichtenstein trained as a United States Army pilot which undoubtedly informed the references of aviation and aeronautical themes throughout his works that included Jet Pilot (1962), Brattata (1962) and Okay Hot-Shot, Okay! (1963). 

In Salute to Aviation, which is fixed on a vertical canvas, Lichtenstein depicts the elementary parts of an aircraft. Divided diagonally, the right-hand side of the image is predominantly swathed in a solid block of crimson, whilst the components on the left-hand side are defined through their varied, distinct styles: a yellow block features black Benday dots, whilst wing-like curved cylinders at the top of the frame are defined through a heavy black outline. This fusion of contrasting shapes and screen-print techniques gives depth and texture to illustrate the mechanics of the machinery.
