"The raised impression of the opaque Rowlux gives a textured, tactile effect to the upper half of the image, evoking a softness to the sky and a serenity to the scene through the calmness of the sky’s pale creamy, powdery white tone."

Roy Lichtenstein’s Seascape (1) was made in 1964 and issued in 1965 for the series ‘New York Ten’, which was a seminal series of prints by the rising avant-garde New York artists of the 1960s.

Seascape (1)  was the first in which Lichtenstein used the translucent Rowlux vinyl sheet to create new optical and colour effects, whilst simultaneously positioning him as a graphic artist of the period. He worked on his landscapes, moonscapes and seascapes series for over three decades, ironically incorporating artificial materials in mixed-media works to conjure ‘naturalistic’ settings.

Although the print is seemingly simple with its three distinct areas – cloudy sky, jagged horizon and belly of the blue sea – the horizontal direction of the dots in the sea beneath the vertical direction of the Rowlux’s hexagonal shapes seen in the sky seemingly evoke movement. According to Rowland Technologies, Rowlux is "manufactured in a variety of materials including cellulose propionate, vinyl, and polycarbonate" and is available "as translucent sheeting or as an opaque sheet with vacuum metalized backing." Lichtenstein used both translucents and opaques during the 1960s.

The raised impression of the opaque Rowlux gives a textured, tactile effect to the upper half of the image, evoking a softness to the sky and a serenity to the scene through the calmness of the sky’s pale creamy, powdery white tone. The thin cobalt-blue wave that slices through the centre injects a boldness through the brilliance of the blue shade, whilst the curvature of the wave’s ripple invites movement. Beneath, Lichtenstein’s Benday dots evoke the vast depth of the sea which creates an almost dizzying effect in the repetition of lines of painted blue dots.
