Roy Lichtenstein Ten Landscapes
"Each of the landscape images are inspired by comic strips, advertisements and other printed sources which played with the concept of traditional landscape painting."
After his comic-inspired Pop prints in the early 1960s, Roy Lichtenstein began exploring the recurring theme of landscapes. In 1967, he created the series Ten Landscapes, which features screenprints with collages containing iridescent Mylar, photography, and Rowlux, combined to create a ‘series of images rich in textural and spatial interplay’ described by The Prints of Roy Lichtenstein: A catalogue raisonne.
The series contains invented, imaginary views, rather than illustrations of a specific scene. Each of the landscape images are inspired by comic strips, advertisements and other printed sources which played with the concept of traditional landscape painting. The series challenged art standards by producing landscapes with commercial printing techniques of flat colours and dots.
Incredibly involved with the production of the series, Lichtenstein created preparatory drawings and collages, cut each screenprint stencil by hand, shot the photographs and closely supervised the cutting of the Rowlux (a type of plastic sheet Lichtenstein found in a novelty store and frequently incorporated in his art) to ensure that each print had the correct moiré pattern.
The photo-collage Pop art series incorporated synthetic materials such as Mylar and Rowlux (a type of plastic sheet Lichtenstein found in a novelty store and frequently incorporated in his art) which created a contemporary, industrial aesthetic. Rowlux was initially used in his print Seascape (1965). The manufactured materials create a sense of movement through their reflection of light, evoking the shimmering effects of light and water.
Ten Landscapes was Lichtenstein’s first solo print portfolio, published by Rosa Esman’s Original Editions in collaboration with Leo Castelli Gallery. Containing ten screen prints with photo-collage on various wove papers and materials, each print is mounted to a composition board with a strip of linen tape at the top, covered by a folder of white Cranes Crest paper. The prints are kept in a portfolio box made from aluminium, Plexiglas and black cloth-covered boards designed so that one of the prints can be displayed through the Plexiglas top when laid on a table. The title page is screen-printed in yellow and blue on white wove paper.
