    Thinking Nude 1994 is one of Lichtenstein’s ‘Nude series’ based on collages he made earlier in his career, later to be implemented in oil and acrylic. Influenced by DC comic romances ‘Love’ and ‘Girl,’ and continuing to experiment with innovation, Thinking Nude is solely focused on this intriguing female figure lying on the bed, facing the viewer, yet completely absorbed in her own thought. Again, Lichtenstein plays with the close up in this cropped image; the viewer is encouraged to focus singularly on this female character, yet we cannot ascertain what keeps her so lost in thought.
    The background motifs are familiar, reminiscent of existing features in Interiors; ordinary everyday objects elevated from the mundane through bold shapes, geometric lines and vibrant colourways. In Thinking Nude, he uses dots of different sizes allowing them to extend over defined contours, creating a contrast of light and shadow. 
    The Thinking Nude is both a female character seen through the prism of a male gaze, tantalising and an object of desire, but, unlike the tearful victims of Lichtenstein’s earlier portraits, here she is captured in a state of content, in control of her own impulses and experiences.

    A different rendition of the relief print, Thinking Nude, this State 1 print edition comes in different colour runs. A dominance of red means the State 1 works appear warmer and less severe, which is also supported by the less strong contrast to the blue contours. (11 colours in 4 runs).
