Andy Warhol Mickey Mouse (F & S II. 265)
Meaning & History“Anyone (living or not, human or mouse) can be a cultural icon that sells, a celebrity. When celebrity is seen through its ability to sell, then being packaged to sell makes one a celebrity.” Greg Metcalf
Andy Warhol's 1981 Myths series consists of ten screenprints reflecting different fictional characters that formed American popular culture. Mickey Mouse, one of the most extensively merchandised figures in popular culture, is aptly included in the Myths series. Throughout his career, Warhol frequently explored themes related to celebrities, commercial icons, and prominent figures, as seen in works featuring Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly. In Myths, however, Warhol expands his focus to include fictional characters from American mythology, popular culture, and contemporary life. These figures, derived from childhood stories, allegorical tales, and traditional folklore, evoke nostalgia and highlight the allure of America's storied past. Warhol enhances the visual appeal of nine of the ten prints in the series by incorporating glittering diamond dust, adding an extra layer of glamour to the artworks.
In the print featuring Mickey Mouse, Walt Disney's iconic character is depicted in his signature, slightly off-centre pose, with his instantly recognizable large ears prominently occupying much of the frame as he gazes to the side. The character's face is subtly outlined in gold and pink, while the addition of diamond dust further enhances Mickey's sparkle and allure. Against the print’s neutral tones and dark background, his vivid red tongue and broad smile are striking. Despite the character's simple black-and-white colour scheme, the composition elicits strong emotional responses and nostalgia, evoking memories of early television viewing through his cheerful expression and iconic ears.
