Andy Warhol Life Savers (F & S II.353)
Meaning & HistoryPlease do not lick this screen!
Please do not lick this page! Life Savers is a delicious screenprint from Andy Warhol’s vibrant 1985 Ads Series. Warhol and his master printer Rupert Jasen Smith gave ten advertisements that serve as the most iconic representations of American commercial culture from the second half of the 20th century a pop art makeover. Using his Warholian flair, the pop artist added a dash of glitz to the appropriated images as a critique of the role that commercial media plays in the current obsession with consumption.
The print's upper section features three rows of ring-shaped Life Saver sweets against a pastel pink backdrop, all rendered in warm, extremely saturated colours. The characteristic candy package with the light-hearted warning, "Please do not lick this page," is displayed beneath the text. Through his use of vibrant colour and iconic screenprint technique, Warhol makes these Life Savers look even more delicious than the real thing.
