    Nude with Blue Hair is a screenprint from Lichtenstein’s 1994 Nude series recognisable for his signatures; a distressed female, classic portrait style and highly simplified colour ways that mimic commercial printing techniques. However, in Nude with Blue Hair, the artist crops the image, placing the figure head with no distracting body image or backdrop, so that as a viewer we are left to focus on the emotional interior of this female character. Anguish and despair emanate from her carefully curated expression, a hand resting against her forehead, we can only wonder about her distressed interior monologue.  A commentary on the cultural landscape Lichtenstein was working in, Nude with Blue Hair, posits the female figure as a product of the world she inhabits, lacking female agency or the freedoms to escape the societal inequalities of the time.
    Lichtenstein continues to evolve earlier techniques, experimenting with the art form, ‘chiaroscuro’ which he devised with dots and shading mixed with flat areas of colour. With new diagonal stripes and relief prints to create depth, this new graphic form of printing enhances the volume of his cartoon-like female, to larger-than-life measures as if we could meet her in real life.
    Nude with Blue Hair is, arguably, considered Lichtenstein’s most important graphic work on paper, pushing forward contemporary printmaking beyond his time.
