    "Water Lilies with Cloud is part of the Water Lilies series, six prints, in which Lichtenstein elevated the perception of the pop art form: taking such famous Monet motifs, according to one biographer, ‘Lichtenstein recognised how easily the unreal is validated as the real because viewers have accepted so many visual conceptions that they don’t analyse what they see."

     

    Water Lilies with Cloud, 1992, is part of Lichtenstein’s Water Lilies series based on the famous Impressionist paintings by Claude Monet. This later series of artworks by Lichtenstein not only employ combinations of less bright colour ways but utilises screen printing on stainless steel to create an appearance of reflected water within the two-dimensional print.

    Working with new master printmaker, Donald Saff, Lichtenstein created the swirl motif on stainless steel that he remembered from the metal dashboards of 20’s and 30’s automobiles. So the abstract artwork invites the viewer to keep engaging with this strangely familiar water lily scene, where clouds seemingly simmer beneath the surface of the water garden.

    As a viewer when we look at the image, although the surface is intricate and textured, there is a sense of movement - this is not a stagnant depiction but one that draws viewers in with the motion of the skies.
