Lichtenstein’s Reflections on Conversation is one of seven prints, from the Reflections series, created later in the artist’s career, which take his familiar pop art motifs, in particular the visual language of popular culture, but subvert them through contrastive visuals and distorted perception.

Taking an everyday scenario, an intimate conversation with two figures, this layered and multi-faceted portrait asks viewers to consider the relationship between reality and representation, visual perception and character distortion through the refracted lens of the print. 

Reflections on Conversation initially looks familiar with its Lichtenstein pop art signatures: comic book-like characters rendered through bold primary colours, big ben day dots and bands of stripes. Yet here the outline of the figures is obscured: slashed by reflective materials, we can only decipher the nature of their conversation through what the artist chooses to allow us to view. 

Through the reflective diagonal stripes, Lichtenstein obscures all the features apart from their eyes, which therefore become a framing device to focus the viewer’s perception. The figure on the right wears glasses also with a visible reflection - as if we are seeing characters through multiple illusions. 

Roy Lichtenstein’s Reflections on Conversation is one of his most densely layered and complex portraits, which continues to challenge traditional notions of artist, subject and viewer.
