"Reflections on the Scream, 1990, is reflective of the sophisticated new style of Roy Lichtenstein’s later work whilst staying true to his pop art roots. The title of this artwork not only literally refers to the cry of the baby depicted but is also a wry reference to Edvard Munch’s iconic painting, ‘The Scream’ (1895)."

Reflections on the Scream, 1990, is reflective of the sophisticated style of Roy Lichtenstein’s later work whilst staying true to his pop art roots. The title of this artwork not only literally refers to the cry of the baby depicted but is also a wry reference to Edvard Munch’s iconic painting, ‘The Scream’ (1895). However, whilst Lichtenstein liked to reference other artists and art movements throughout his oeuvre, this depiction is far removed from the dark psychology of Munch’s famous work.
The inspiration for Reflections on the Scream, a signed screenprint edition of 68, was a cartoon in a 60’s comic book, ‘BLONDIE at Home Sweet Home.’ However, in this artwork, he reinvents our traditional interpretation of the image: we understand the obvious distress of the crying child, isolated and absent from any parental support, but the narrative behind the image is left open to the viewer’s interpretation.
The dramatic effect of the screaming child is heightened through Lichtenstein’s fragmented composition: the partly hidden images are obscured to the point of abstraction with harsh lines cut across the print to result in the layered pictorial effect. By using this graphic compositional style the artist plays with the viewer’s perception through light and reflection.
The image is comprised of Lichtenstein’s characteristic pop colours, bold graphic outlines and a merging of ben day dots and diagonal stripes: here the reflective stripes are integrated into the image as if to highlight how easily our perception of an image can be manipulated through context.
