Roy Lichtenstein Cathedral #3 (Corlett 77)
“The dark colouring of the inky-blue against the white background allows the definition of the building’s shape to be more visible”
Based on Monet’s Rouen Cathedral series painted by the French painter in 1890-91, Lichtenstein’s series created in 1969 replaced brushstrokes with Benday dots to depict the cathedral in different states of weather at different times of day throughout the year.
Monet’s Rouen Cathedral series was intended to capture the changing character of the natural light throughout the seasons in a range of weather conditions throughout the seasons. Both Monet and Lichtenstein used the series to highlight the act of seeing – for Monet through light, and for Lichtenstein through creating a commercialised effect through screenprinting in his reworking of the Impressionist series.
Cathedral #3, signed and dated in pencil in the lower right, is made from one aluminium plate in a dark blue colour, giving the impression of a night-time scene. The dark colouring of the inky-blue against the white background allows the definition of the building’s shape to be more visible.
