"Picasso has always been such a huge influence that I thought when I started the cartoon paintings that I was getting away from Picasso, and even my cartoons of Picasso were done almost to rid myself of his influence." Roy Lichtenstein

Expressionist Head is one of seven prints from Lichtenstein’s Expressionist Woodcut series, which simultaneously referenced and parodied the German Expressionist movement. It is a visually impacting print which, arguably, is the most compelling of the series; Head is a complex composition as it is also shot through with surrealist themes and is heavily indebted to Picasso.
Expressionist Head is a seven-colour woodcut print of a sharply carved, angular face rendered from jagged angles, interconnecting primary colours, flat shapes, and heavy black outlines, which Lichtenstein appropriated from commercial press. Infact, the juxtaposition of the woodcut textures, simulated wood grains and angular lines as well as the distinct colours reflect the tone of commercial printed materials with which Lichtenstein is synonymous.
Influenced by German Expressionist artist Max Pechstein’s 1920’s Head, Lichtenstein’s is a more controlled and colourful version: one can still envision the small coloured pencil sketches that started these images before the artist scaled them up by projector. Lichtenstein created the artwork using baltic birch to achieve the smoothest surface possible: every element in the print is a different shape conjoined by a variety of colours and patterns that resemble some of Picasso’s masterpieces.
The dramatic looking facial features in Expressionist Head invite a viewer to keep engaging in the artwork: the viewer is left to decipher the narrative behind this complex character. Lichtenstein purposely obscures the viewer from any context, so the character becomes identity-less and in doing so he comments on the distortion between art and perception.
