    In Composition III Lichtenstein continues the abstraction process that he began in Composition II of the four part Composition series created from ‘95-’96. His passion for music and its transformative power in our daily lives is distilled through the visual immediacy of this artwork.
    The vibrant, looping musical notations appear almost in motion here as if denoting the very essence of melody making: his signature pop art characteristics are apparent from the delineated black graphic lines to primary colours and stripes and ben day dots, all mimicking the mechanical printing processes of mass media. However in delving into art history traditions and the exploration of formal artistic elements, such as line, colour and space, Lichtenstein conflates the boundaries between popular culture and fine art traditions; thereby challenging the viewers notions of perspective and observation. 
    His passion for the transformative power of music and harmonies are brought to life both figuratively and metaphorically in Composition III: with his application of punchy pop colours the artist gives his sheet music an energetic appeal, with some of his music notes represented outside the stave, as though they are dancing. 
    Composition III is another striking print in the four part Composition series which creates a symphonic mixture of colour and form.
