    Composition IV is the final print in Roy Lichtenstein’s four part Composition series, which is his artistic celebration of music making. A lifelong passion of the artist, Lichtenstein even said in a 1977 interview, “What I really want to do is music, but I won't give up my day job!" 
    Composition IV is arguably the most abstract artwork of the series; the main composition is reduced down to a distilled disposition with a few centralised waves of black and red detailed notes and staves. Composition IV is a visual representation of the symphony of the music score working together, Lichtenstein’s musical notes come to the surface of the print so dynamically, they could easily be a symphony we are listening to in reality.  The composition is distilled through Lichtenstein’s pop art signatures: bold primary colours, defined graphic lines and diagonal pictorial stripes.
    In Composition IV, Lichtenstein skillfully creates an emotional response to a picture produced from his own mechanical pop art process and in doing so celebrates the visceral nature of the creative experience.
