Roy Lichtenstein’s American Indian Theme V is the fifth screenprint created with woodcut on handmade Suzuki paper from the six print American Indian Theme series, the artist made in 1980.
American Indian Theme V is a recognisable print from a set of artworks created by the artist in response to the Native Americans he had held a lifelong interest in. The initial idea for the prints stemmed from Lichtenstein’s time living in Long Island near to Shinnecock Indian Reservation, the home of the Native American communities: by witnessing their gentle behaviour and rituals, the artist was inspired to create prints that critiqued the mass media’s cliched portrayal of these peoples.
American Indian Theme V, similar to American Indian Theme 1, 11, 111, is a complex composition, in which we can recognise the artist’s homage to other artists and movements; Picasso, surrealism and hints of cubism.
In American Indian Theme V, there are familiar themes and tropes seen in the rest of the series: a single carved wooden figure, threaded with bright yellow braided rope, in a deep blue ocean of water. Other recognisable motifs include a feather that could be from a headdress, quilts and textiles, and facial features including a dark pigment carving out glazed eyes, a downturned mouth and outlined nose.
On first glance the viewer can not discern the narrative of the print, instead we instinctively are drawn to the complex techniques used to create this composition: the image is first chiselled out into a block of wood and inked with a roller, the indentations are then covered with paper and compressed before being imprinted onto the paper.
By drawing attention to the stereotypical tribal motifs of the Native Americans on the print surface, Lichtenstein asks the viewer to question our cultural understanding of these indigenous communities.
