"The carved out eyes suggest human presence: the menacing gaze suggests anarchy and division within this tribal community. The interlinking melange of shapes and motifs suggest motion within this story of exploding pattern and colour."

American Indian Theme VI, 1980 is the sixth print in Roy Lichtenstein’s American Indian Theme series which continues the artist’s exploration of mass media’s depiction of Native American tribes.
However unlike earlier prints in the series, which focused on single figure formations, this is a multilayered composition. Lichtenstein’s pop art signatures are immediately visible: bold colourings, diagonal stripes, delineated outlines and ben day dots. In  American Indian Theme VI, the scattered assemblage of historical artefacts and geometric shapes are boldly arranged to reflect native american weaponry, albeit abstracted so the viewer continues to engage in this complex imagery.
The carved out eyes suggest human presence: the menacing gaze suggests anarchy and division within this tribal community. The interlinking melange of shapes and motifs suggest motion within this story of exploding pattern and colour.
In American Indian Theme VI, Lichtenstein identifies the stereotypical depiction of Native American Indian communities in the mass cultural consciousness and critiques cultural misrepresentation.
