    Roy Lichtenstein’s Peace Through Chemistry, 1970, is a five part series composed of four prints and one bronze plate, in which the artist taps into the traditional boundaries between mass commercial printing and fine art forms, which lie at the heart of his visual language. 
    A series of intricate compositions, the Peace Through Chemistry prints immediately conjure up images of the mass industrial age of the 30’s and the sleek design it propagated. As if to decimate the stereotypical mass imagery associated with the industrialism movement, Lichtenstein inverts his compositions: the images are divided into three panels, then halved by diagonal lines, creating a structure that resembles a triptych. 
    The bold print series conflates so many of Lichtenstein’s passions and obsessions: the triptychs include multiple narratives within each print, from natural imagery rendered in the artist’s trademark graphic shapes and lines to an almost scientific portrait. (We can even recognise a man holding a test tube in Peace Through Chemistry, 1970). The four lithographs in Peace Through Chemistry use a solid white support, strategically placed patterns and rich primary colours to varying degrees. We recognise many of the artist’s symbols and motifs: vibrant colours, strong delineated outlines, bold ben day dots and  diagonal stripes. 
    Peace Through Chemistry prints are infused with many of Lichtenstein’s tropes: religious iconography, comic book characters inflated to cartoon like proportions, mass consumerism. Most importantly, the Peace Through Chemistry series investigates the battles between humanity and science in a post industrial age, questions which are again relevant today, as we head into an Artificial Intelligence era.
