Roy Lichtenstein Blonde (C.153) 1978 For Sale

This striking print by Roy Lichtenstein was produced in 1978 and made from lithograph on Arches 88 paper. From an edition of 38, it is the third in Lichtenstein’s Surrealist series. 

A head hovers in the centre of the frame, balanced on the spear-like tip of her golden mane. Her forlorn eyes have a heavy sadness, reflective of the expressions depicted in Lichtenstein’s earlier comic-book heroines of the 1960s. The absence of a speech bubble at the top of the print renders the woman mute, giving a haunting ambiguity to the surreal scene that is devoid of Lichtenstein’s usual heightened emotional text.

The use of stripes across two thirds of the background gives the print a graphic, geometric impact, while the red stripes across half her face seem to signal danger, particularly coupled with her anguished expression. The blending of half of her striped face with the background also suggests an evaporation or dissolving of her features.

The print seems to play with the concept of gravity: a lock of blonde hair is positioned vertically upright on the ground, whilst bubbles can be seen above the top of her hair could also evoke an underwater scene. On the right of the frame is a faux-wood statue appropriated from Lichtenstein’s American-Indian series of the 1980s.
