    Roy Lichtenstein’s Virtual Interior with Book, 1996, is a signed screenprint on Somerset paper, one of an edition of 100. An artwork created just a year before his death, A Virtual Interior with Book brings together many of the techniques he explored over his career and is illustrative of how refined his compositions had become by the end of his life - it is almost difficult to believe he is the same artist that is so synonymous with the comic book prints of his early 60’s era. 
    The framed composition includes many of the artist’s recognisable pop art motifs: bold ben day dot formations, diagonal stripes, delineated black outlines and vibrant colours. In Virtual Interior with Book, the artist also explores concepts of space and representation in art: the artist plays with the viewer’s perception through his fractured pictorial lens, how can reality and illusion co-exist within the framework of art. 
    Whilst less is known about Lichtenstein’s opinions on how he saw a future world  than his pop art counterpart, Warhol, by naming this print Virtual Interior with Book, perhaps he was as prescient as Warhol and envisioned today’s Artificial Intelligence age. 
    Virtual Interior with Book is reflective of Lichtenstein’s creative visual language, in which the stylised essence of the composition conflates fine art and commercial design.
