Roy Lichtenstein The Gun in America (Corlett 237)
'With the image showing the smoke, it tells us that the gun has already gone off, before we’ve even had the chance to protect ourselves, ironic for a country symbolised by freedom and democracy.'
Roy Lichtenstein’s Gun In America print is one of his most iconic works and whilst he created the original artwork in 1968, this version was re-created later in 1989, but the symbolism and motif continues to resonate and be reused decades later.Gun In America places Lichtenstein in the pantheon of canonised American artists by capturing the symbol of one of America’s most prescient and enduring social issues: gun crime. And this was the context with which it was famously used on the cover of Time Magazine’s June 1968 issue which followed the assassination by gun point of Senator Robert F Kennedy at a Los Angeles Hotel. The assassination ignited social outcry as it came shortly after the fatal shootings of two heralded American public figures, Martin Luther King and five years earlier President John Kennedy. Lichtenstein’s dramatic, poignant image requiring viewers to stare down the barrel of a gun is forever cemented with 1968, a transformative year that saw a nation ignited to stand up to a climate of violence, tension and fear.Lichtenstein’s print perfectly penetrates each and every one of us: with an image requiring all of us to stare down the barrel, he effectively has each viewer asking who is next. The graphic gun image features his recognisable characteristics: solid background block colouring, bright pop colours and ben day dots. The block colouring is in patriotic blue merged with red graphics (reminiscent of the American flag) and the artist delineates the outlines of the gun in his signature strong black lines. Interestingly the smoke is created in yellow not white – is this a tale of hope or caution? With the image showing the smoke, it tells us that the gun has already gone off, before we’ve even had the chance to protect ourselves, ironic for a country symbolised by freedom and democracy.Lichtenstein’s Gun in America is one of his most important works and has come to symbolise the darker side of the American consciousness, still so relevant again today. -
