Roy Lichtenstein’s Painting on Blue and Yellow Wall, 1984 is one of eight prints from his elaborate Paintings series which takes a ‘picture within a picture’ composition as its central motif. Painting on Blue and Yellow Wall is reminiscent of another in the series, Painting in A Gold Frame, which showcases fictitious frames as if in a small section of an imaginary painting.The frame within frame composition is almost like an illusion on first glance: Lichtenstein continuously conflates artistic boundaries and contrasts strokes and patterns: the pastel coloured brushstrokes that appear as painterly as abstract expressionism are both hand drawn and man made, contrasting formal ‘painting’ with mass produced printing techniques. The colours are both pastel and primary, fluid shapes are contrasted with cartoon like motifs and graphic delineated outlines: the precise silver frame edge sits against the blue and yellow swirls of the background faux wood wall.Painting on Blue and Yellow Walls is a woodcut and lithograph on arches 88 paper, part of an edition of 60, in which the artist skillfully presents a print that is an image in itself, as well as being the representation of another image. And in doing so Lichtenstein undermines traditional notions of artistic originality. -
