Roy Lichtenstein’s Industry And the Arts II, 1969 is a near identical reproduction of Industry and the Arts I, and so in this print the artist satires his own mass production pop art genre.
Industry And The Arts II is a screenprint on C. M. Fabriano – 100/100 Cotone paper, part of an edition of 250. In the artwork, Lichtenstein mimics the emblematic signage used in newspapers and comic strips but the motifs, which juxtapose industrial living with the creative arts, are a prelude to his 1970’s Peace Through Chemistry series.
In Industry and The Arts II, the artist divides up the print surface in two by an oblique line running diagonally across the artwork. The two opposing sides clearly portray two divided worlds which must find some way to co-exist with another within a contemporary society: the motifs of the top section reflect the machinery of the industrial culture then dominating society, we can see cog wheels and smoke chugging out of rooftops, all depicted in smoky grey, blue and silver tones. The bottom section is starkly contrasting in primary colours filled with pop art tropes, including curvilinear shapes, graphic black outlines, ben day dots, all depicting creative outlets. We can spot the same musical notes and staves, which Lichtenstein went on to dedicate his Composition series too.
Lichtenstein uses Industry and The Arts II to critique mass mechanism overpowering the visceral nature of creativity, but satirically does it through mass produced commercial design practices.
